VERITAS, PROBITAS, IUSTITIA.

Fostering Regional Leaders: LEB Malaysia and Universitas Indonesia Collaboration

The collaboration between London Examinations Board (LEB) Malaysia and Universitas Indonesia (UI) stands as a meaningful example of cross-border academic partnership in Southeast Asia. At the heart of this collaboration lies the Asian Youth Leadership Award (AYLA) programme, an initiative designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders through regional dialogue, intellectual exchange, and cross-cultural experiences.

Each year, a selected group of Malaysian university students—predominantly from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)—travels to UI to participate in this enriching programme. The AYLA platform provides students with the unique opportunity to engage in intellectual discourse on regional leadership development, tackling pressing issues that shape the future of Asia.

The programme is not limited to leadership theories; rather, it emphasizes the practical aspects of leadership in a multicultural and interconnected world. Students are exposed to discussions on governance, youth empowerment, social innovation, and sustainable development, while also gaining the chance to share perspectives with their Indonesian peers. This cross-pollination of ideas fosters not only personal growth but also a deeper appreciation of regional cooperation.

Universitas Indonesia, with its strong academic tradition and motto “Veritas, Probitas, Iustitia” (Truth, Honesty, Justice), provides an ideal environment for such an exchange. Meanwhile, LEB Malaysia continues to serve as a catalyst, ensuring that Malaysian students gain access to platforms that sharpen their leadership capacity and broaden their worldview.

Over the years, the AYLA programme has become a bridge of friendship and intellectual solidarity between Malaysia and Indonesia, nurturing young leaders who are better prepared to contribute to their societies and the region at large. For LEB Malaysia and UI, this collaboration represents more than an academic partnership—it is an investment in the future of Asia’s leadership.

We’re incredibly proud to have achieved this ranking. As Scotland's leading university for widening participation, with the belief that education should be available to all, this achievement is testament to the hard work of each and every colleague in embedding that ethos.” - Professor James Miller, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS
