In 2021, amidst the uncertainties and challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Kolej SPACE at UTMKL launched the iDEAS Double Diploma programmes – an innovative initiative designed by Kuala Lumpur International Education Consortium (KLIEC) aimed at providing students with an enhanced undergraduate education.
At its inception, the iDEAS programmes welcomed 16 eager students, and as the year progressed, its reputation grew, attracting more students who recognised the value of the unique educational opportunity offered by Kolej SPACE.
To accommodate the growing number of students, Kolej SPACE partnered with Kolej Siswa Jaya of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), a sprawling student accom-modation complex capable of housing thousands of students. Located just a short 10-minute drive from UTM Kuala Lumpur academic campus, Kolej Siswa Jaya provided a safe, comfortable, and conducive living environment for the students, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among participants.
Growing the Number
As Kolej SPACE at UTMKL experienced a surge in interest and enrolment, a new era of opportunity and growth emerged. With the influx of incoming students came the need for a comprehensive orientation programme – a pivotal moment that marked a significant milestone in our journey of academic excellence and student success.
Prior to 2022, Kolej SPACE had operated without the capacity to conduct a formal orientation for incoming students due to lower enrolment numbers. However, as interest in the college grew and enrolment numbers soared, the need for a structured orientation programme became increasingly apparent.
The comprehensive orientation programme at Kolej SPACE was designed to equip students with the knowledge, tools, and resources they needed to succeed academically, socially, and personally. The orientation week also plays a crucial role in fostering social integration and personal growth.
Fostering Leadership Potential
In a pivotal moment for student empowerment and engagement, Kolej SPACE at UTMKL witnessed the emergence of the Kolej SPACE Student Council (KSSC) from the 2021 intake. With the establishment of KSSC, a new era of student-led initiatives and advocacy was born, marking a significant step towards fostering a vibrant and inclusive campus community.
The formation of KSSC represented a turning point in the institution's approach to student leadership and involvement. As students from the 2021 intake stepped forward to take on leadership roles within the council, they brought with them a fresh perspective and a commitment to making a positive impact on campus life.
The primary responsibilities of KSSC is to plan and conduct orientation programmes for incoming students. With their experience as newcomers themselves, KSSC is uniquely positioned to understand the needs and concerns of incoming students and to design orientation programmes that address these needs effectively.
